Zach Hyman and Connor McDavid reach career-highs on same goal against Calgary Flames

In the 2023–24 season’s third instalment of the Battle of Alberta, the Edmonton Oilers trailed 3–0 before the end of the first period. However, the Oilers got one back to pull within two of the Calgary Flames.

Hyman scores and McDavid assists

The Oilers found themselves on the power play in the final few minutes of the opening frame. After a collision between Leon Draisaitl and Flames goalie Daniel Vladar, the Oilers came out with the puck and McDavid connected with Hyman.

Career-highs were reached by both players in the play. McDavid set a new one for himself while Hyman tied his.

McDavid’s home point streak extends to 22 games

McDavid put up a six-assist game against the Detroit Red Wings in their last home game before their Central Division road trip. The Oilers then returned home for a five-game homestand.

In the first game versus the Boston Bruins, McDavid reached the 20-game home point streak with two assists. Against the Minnesota Wild, he added two more assists to tie his career-high set last season.

With the assist he got on Hyman’s goal, McDavid set a new career-high, now scoring in Rogers Place for 22 consecutive games.

Hyman ties career high for goals in a season

Zach Hyman never reached 30 goals in a season prior to 2022–23. His career-high was 27 goals set in 2021–22. However, last year he scored 36 goals to blow his previous marker out of the water. He became a point-per-game player for the first time in his career.

Whether he’d reach the same level of play or not was yet to be known back in October. However, the 31-year-old just found a new gear and is scoring at an even faster rate. In just 54 games this season, he already tied his career-high with his 36th goal.

To top it all off, in the second period, Hyman scored again to outright set a new career-high with his 37th goal.

More milestones to come

We’ll see how many more career-highs are reached or set by this Edmonton squad. There are still plenty of Oilers milestones left for the season.
