Hutson is a 24-year-old winger known for his speed and offensive talents. Signed as an undrafted free agent, Hutson has continued to emerge as a prospect through his early 20s.

Hutson has produced offensively at virtually every stop in his career. Early totals in the USHL and NCAA translated effectively as an AHL rookie last season. His point totals show that Hutson is a threat either as a scorer or as a playmaker.
Hutson’s strengths
Offence is clearly the main selling point for Hutson. He has command of the puck, and is an offensive threat as both a shooter and a passer. Naturally, his speed and skating are assets here, but his puck control and creativity are essential as well.
His AHL success speaks to his abilities to be an offensive focal point. Expecting a point per game in the NHL is a bit lofty, but Hutson has the talent to take advantage of his opportunities at any level. Getting those chances might rely on other factors, though. Hutson will need to provide more than just offence to become an NHL regular. The good news is that Hutson has shown some defensive capabilities, earning a role as an AHL penalty killer.
While Hutson will never be the biggest or most physical player on the ice, there is a path for him to leverage his talents outside of individual offence. Being trusted defensively will pay huge dividends for Hutson, not to mention if he is able to help his team control play.
Growing opportunities ahead
Given his age, the time for Hutson to push for an NHL role is upon us. Some early injury situations for the Oilers might provide a great showcase for Hutson in a bigger role. A stand-in for a potential Matthew Savoie absence is possible, although it is entirely circumstantial. If Hutson is able to prove himself defensively he might be a great fit as an offensive catalyst on a third line alongside Jason Dickinson, for example.
In all fairness, Hutson has already proven himself as a star scorer in the AHL, so there is not much left for him to prove outside the NHL. If he is ready, it will make a huge difference to the Oilers forward depth with Savoie graduating, Isaac Howard is often thought of as the team’s best prospect. Howard is a few years younger, and his draft pedigree is worth noting, but at this point Hutson might be the more polished and well rounded undersized scoring winger.
Firmly in his mid-twenties, there will not be many more chances for Hutson to get a look in the NHL. The next season or two will be enormous for his career. Many AHL scorers of his calibre never quite grab hold of a long term NHL role, but there is at least a path for Hutson to break the trend.
