Betting on the NHL: What You Need to Know

Most people know that ice hockey is Canada’s favorite sport. Not only do most Canadians get exposed to the game at an early age, but the sport also has its origins in Montreal. The National Hockey League is certainly one of the most popular hockey leagues in the world, and though it is based in the United States, seven of the teams that compete are Canadian.

Naturally, this has spurred many Canadian bookies to create odds and offer bets on the NHL. That is why, in this article, we are going to share a few tips for betting on the league if you are in Canada. Without further ado, let us delve into the meat and potatoes.

Find Reputable Websites

The first thing to do is find a reputable and trustworthy website. There are quite a few offshore bookies that offer excellent NHL odds Canada and allow Canadians to wager, not just on the hockey league, but also on a variety of other sports. The question is, how do you know a legit site?

  • License: a license is an absolute must. If a website is unlicensed, then it is best left avoided. Licenses are seals of approval that prove a website is safe, reviewed, secured, and legitimate.
  • Reputation: thanks to the internet, we now have access to a ton of review websites, that cover the pros and cons of online bookies.
  • Features: finally, look through the website before signing up. If you find some features you enjoy, you can make your account. If, however, you don’t like the site’s perks, look elsewhere.

A Familiarity with the Sport

A lot of people wager on hockey, or any sport in general, without actually knowing much about it. After all, they have the odds, they know how they work, and so what more do they need? However, it is important to note that the odds are not always right. Sometimes, an intimate familiarity with the sport can help you make a better, and more informed decision.

If you are new to hockey, we recommend watching a couple of games with all of the teams involved, before you ever start betting. Or, at the very least, start by making small, inconsequential, and simple bets. Once you get a better handle on the game, then you can move on to the more complex wagers, if that is what you are interested in.

Remove all Biases

It is quite normal to have biases when betting on a sport. Canadians, for example, will certainly feel a bias towards the seven NHL teams that are from Canada. However, when betting, you must do your best to remove any and all bias. After all, you are wagering your hard-earned money. And when we discuss matters of money, we remove any bias that we might have.

It is best to wager on the team that is most likely to win. The odds are not always right, but for the most part they are. Do not ignore what the odds makers are saying out of a sense of national bias or national identity.
