Edmonton Oilers place Adam Erne on waivers

With the Edmonton Oilers making the Corey Perry signing official, a roster move was needed to fit Perry’s $775K salary under the salary cap. The resulting roster move that made the math work was Adam Erne being placed on waivers.

Adam Erne’s performance with Edmonton

In 23 NHL games this year, Erne has posted one goal (which was an absolute beauty) and one assist, has a +2 rating, and is averaging 7:46 of ice time per game.

Erne makes the most sense to be waived/sent down, as his two points are tied for last on the team with Dylan Holloway (not including the one game played by Philip Kemp), as is his ice time per game at almost three full minutes less than Derek Ryan. He should still remain the first call-up in case of any injuries though. Simply put, Erne’s play is unfortunately not at the same level it was when he was with the Detroit Red Wings, and it has made him the most expendable while the Oilers tinker with their lineup.

The next question becomes whose place in the gameday lineup Perry takes, with any of Ryan, Sam Gagner or Mattias Janmark being the most likely suspects.
