Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 38: Edmonton beats Detroit in overtime to tie franchise record win streak

The Edmonton Oilers posted two win streaks of eight games in the first half of their season. The first time around, they failed to tie the franchise record of nine; however, this time, they would not be denied.

Nine. Straight. Wins. A new franchise record is in sight for the next game.

Charts and observations from the gritty win over the Chicago Blackhawks can be seen below!

Game events

  • In their previous game, the Oilers posted just 15 shots on goal. They more than tripled that effort in response against the Red Wings.
  • Other stats were fairly even across the two teams, but the shot differential of 30 is pretty otherworldly.

  • All four regulation goals were scored in the third period, as the game was tied 0–0 after 40 minutes of play.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers’ momentum built in the third as they pulled away in shot attempts.
  • The Red Wings actually mustered 57 shots attempts, which is almost triple the shots they actually got on net. Between the Oilers making blocks and the Red Wings outright missing, they weren’t very accurate.
  • Edmonton had a plethora of high-danger shots as they were relentless in their offence.
  • The Red Wings were kept to the outside for much of their offensive zone time which in some ways explains their low shot totals.

5v5 Corsi

  • The two teams were deadlocked after two periods and at 5v5, they were pretty even on the shot attempt front as well.
  • The Red Wings’ side of the ice was pretty empty overall at 5v5. The Oilers had a strong game on defence overall as they worked as a team to get their ninth straight win.
