The Edmonton Oilers see NHL season-long winning streak end at eight games

Unfortunately, the Edmonton Oilers saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end last night at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Avry is right—the Oilers utterly dominated that game on the ice. They fired the puck towards the Lightning net a whopping 89 times, hitting the net 54 times. Of these attempts, 51 were scoring chances and 25 were high danger chances.

Entering the game, the Oilers’ eight-game streak was the longest winning streak for any team in the NHL this season, and just one off of the Oilers’ franchise record winning streak of nine. The nine-game record was originally set in 2001 from February 20 to March 13, and equaled last season from March 27 to April 13 2023.

This eight-game streak came against mostly inferior teams, but the Oilers used this stretch very well to rebound from a very poor start to the season. Even with the loss last night, the Oilers are now a .500 team and two points out of the second wild card spot in the West with two games in hand on the St. Louis Blues who currently hold down that spot.

The best part about seeing a winning streak snapped is that you get a chance to start a new winning streak. The Oilers will look to get back into the win column on Saturday night as they play host to Matthew Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers.
