Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 29: Edmonton’s losing streak continues with loss to Islanders

After having their eight-game win streak snapped, the Edmonton Oilers are now suddenly back on a losing streak. Finishing their six-game homestand, the team faced off against the New York Islanders to kick off a six-game road trip that sees them travelling out east for three games followed by three games back in the west against California teams.

The Oilers got up by one early in the game, but things went south for the team as the game progressed. Edmonton’s penalty kill ceded two straight power play goals against, and then their power play ceded a shorthanded goal right after. The special teams battle was entirely lost in the second period and that was the difference maker.

Edmonton pushed back but was unable to score again on Ilya Sorokin. Meanwhile, Stuart Skinner was entirely untested in the third period as the Islanders hardly put up any shot attempts let alone shots—as seen in the Corsi charts below, New York basically flatlined in the third, opting to turn off all notions of offence.
