Both the Edmonton Oilers and Bakersfield Condors have been eliminated from the playoffs. Maxim Beryozkin is the only Oilers prospect still playing, and this will be the last prospect update for the 2025–2026 season.
Let’s take a look at the past week and a half in the Edmonton Oilers system.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and was born in 2001 or later.
The Condors-Oilers pipeline
The Oilers are going to need more depth players, and one alternative, aside from costly free agents, could be to look internally.
Many first-year Condors had breakout seasons and have begun to show some NHL-level potential, so let’s take a look at some of their prospects and what roles they could end up in after training camps next season.
Isaac Howard, Forward
Howard’s season was frustrating to say the least for the American. After demanding a trade from Tampa Bay, Howard expected to be a full-time NHLer this year. The winger has gotten NHL time, but not as much as he would’ve liked, with only 29 games under his belt.
Howard’s straightforward offensive thinking has not translated as well as some would have hoped to the NHL. Howard has found scoresheet success with the Condors as one of their most consistent offensive threats.
The 2026–27 season is a make-or-break year for Howard, who is the epitome of a boom-or-bust prospect. He will likely make the Oilers out of training camp, but if he can’t show that his game has evolved to be more complete, expect him to see even more time with the Condors next year.
Quinn Hutson, Forward
Hutson was a moderate surprise for the Condors this past season and was one of their best forwards. Scoring 63 points in 67 games for his AHL rookie campaign, Hutson slowly became one of the favourites for the Red Garrett Memorial rookie of the year award, but came up short to Washington’s Illya Potras.
Hutson is an intelligent puck mover and play creator, with an honest work rate. The 5’11” forward was rewarded for his efforts with four NHL games this past season, and even scored his first career NHL goal in a December game against Boston.
He is another forward that could serve as a quality secondary scorer in the Oilers top nine next season. Expect the 24-year-old to get a long look at Oilers training camp, and the fact that he signed an extension in January bodes well for his NHL outlook.
Viljami Marjala and Roby Jarventie, Forward
Both Scandinavian forwards served the same type of role as clutch secondary scorers this past campaign. Whether it’s through Marjala’s playmaking or Jarventie’s scoring, both players do have NHL upside. They could be injury replacements for the Oilers next season.
Marjala’s contract has another year to it. Jarventie’s contract is up this offseason, and he could realistically sign in Europe.
Josh Samanski and Connor Clattenburg, Forward
Much like the Marjala and Jarventie comparison, both of these forwards are candidates to fill the tough-guy power-forward fourth-liner role with the Oilers next season. Both possess skillsets defined by physicality and energy.
One of these two players will likely make the Oilers roster to replace the likes of Curtis Lazar or Max Jones.
Condor players the Oilers likely let walk this offseason
- James Hamblin (limited development)
- Matvei Petrov (limited development)
- Sam Poulin (limited NHL upside)
- Josh Bloom (likely AHL/ECHL contract candidate)
- Cam Dineen (roster spots in the AHL)
- Calvin Pickard (performance)
Edmonton Oilers prospect updates
AHL
- The Condors season is officially over, after losing in the qualifiers round to the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
- Bakersfield started out strong with a 6–1 victory on the April 23, but dropped the following two games 5–4 on the 25th, and 6–2 on the 26th.
- Expect Huston, and Howard to have breakout seasons next year if they return. Players to keep an eye on include two-way transitional defender Tomas Cibulka, and two-way forward William Nicholl.
- There should not be too much roster turnover for Bakersfield either, as there are only six expiring contracts from players who appeared with the club this season.
ECHL
- The Fort Wayne Komets are on the verge of advancing to the second round of the ECHL playoffs after going up 3–1 in their first-round series against the Indy Fuel.
- Both Samuel Jonsson (.909) and Nathaniel Day (.926) are stable in net, with Day starting three of the games to Jonsson’s one.
- Oilers-affiliated prospect James Stefan remains out with an injury, and Josh Bloom has only suited up for one game all series.
Russia
- Forward prospect Maxim Beryozkin remains the only Oilers prospect outside of the Fort Wayne Komets still in the playoffs. Yaroslavl Lokomotiv is currently down 3–2 in the KHL semi-final to Avangard Omsk. Beryozkin’s TOI and performances have steadily decreased in this series.
