The Edmonton Oilers are now halfway through training camp and the preseason as roster moves start to roll in. Earlier this week, the first major round of cuts was announced, sending a large portion of players at training camp down to the Bakersfield Condors. Saturday morning, the next group of players have been cut from Oilers camp.
This group includes Alex Peters, who was released from his PTO and will report to Bakersfield. Prospects Olivier Rodrigue, Carter Savoie, and Noel Hoefenmayer were loaned to the Condors, where they are expected to spend the season. While veterans Drake Caggiula and Greg McKegg were placed on waivers to be assigned to Bakersfield once cleared.
What is next for Oilers training camp?
The roster is starting to shape up as the Oilers are getting down to the final 10 cuts to make for the start of the regular season. So far, things are going as expected. But there are still a few players to keep an eye on over the next week.
The players in camp on PTOs are still around, Adam Erne, Brandon Sutter, and Sam Gagner (who is recovering from injury and not fully participating in training camp/preseason). But they may be around to help fill veteran spots on the roster during preseason games.
The prospect battle at forward has seen Xavier Bourgault make a strong case to challenge for a roster spot, as he has had a strong showing with his effort level and two-way play thus far. It is still Raphael Lavoie’s spot to lose, but he may not have as long of a leash as he originally did with a disappointing start to the preseason.
