Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 69: Hyman reaches the 50-goal milestone in nice fashion, Edmonton drops to Ottawa

The Edmonton Oilers were looking to leave Ontario with a win. Having lost their game the night prior against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Oilers went up the road to visit the Ottawa Senators. Zach Hyman scored his 49th goal against Toronto but not his 50th, so he had a prime opportunity to make some history for himself in the nation’s capital.

Spoiler alert, he absolutely scored.

Unfortunately, that was the only good part about the game as the Oilers lost due to a late-game goal against that broke a deadlock in the Senators’ favour.

Charts and observations from the game are below!

Game events

  • The Oilers more than doubled the Senators’ shot total but were only able to score three goals to Ottawa’s five.
  • Having played the night before, the Oilers weren’t all too physical putting up just 17 hits.
  • This game was won and lost on special teams as five power play goals were scored between the two teams.

  • Hyman’s 50th goal of the season came on the power play and gave the Oilers a 3–1 lead.
  • However, the Oilers gave up four unanswered goals with Ottawa’s game-winning coming late in the third period on the power play.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers doubled up the Senators in shot attempts too. The Senators barely had anything in the third period at all and this game should not have been tied late into the game.
  • It wasn’t Calvin Pickard‘s best showing with four goals against on 15 shots.
  • Less than 10 seconds elapsed on Mattias Ekholm’s penalty before the Senators scored the go-ahead goal on what was just their second shot attempt of the third.
  • This type of loss stings as the Oilers were the better team in both ends of the ice. Edmonton’s had a good fraction of their shots right in front of Ottawa’s net while also giving up very little in their own net-front areas.

5v5 Corsi

  • The Oilers gave up just two 5v5 shot attempts in the third period. This would be a good recipe for a win most games but they weren’t able to get anything past Joonas Korpisalo in the final frame.
  • As mentioned, this game was won and lost on special teams. Both Edmonton and Ottawa had just one goal each at 5v5.
  • That said, Edmonton’s 5v5 game was still much better than Ottawa’s.
