Unable to string together back-to-back wins all month, the Edmonton Oilers looked to get back into the win column against the New York Islanders, following a tough loss to the New Jersey Devils two nights ago. Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way they planned.
It was a relatively close game for the first 40 minutes, but the Oilers couldn’t manage to solve Ilya Sorokin, who ended up making 49 saves when it was all said and done. The Islanders scored three goals, all in the second period, and eked out a shutout win to send the Oilers back to .500.
Sorokin was phenomenal in this one, clearly the best player on the ice and the difference maker in the game. Zach Hyman led the Oilers with 10 shots on goal, but 13 Oilers had multiple shots; nothing was getting past Sorokin in this one.
It was a tough defeat, but the Oilers will have the chance to turn things around on Saturday night against the New York Rangers.
