Happy Halloween, Oil Rig fans and readers! There is a hockey game early today, which this observer will be covering before going into full party mode. It is on Long Island, however, negating the chance of any of us seeing an Edmonton Oiler in-costume at a local establishment tonight.
This is why we’ve already seen Halloween get-ups from the players, as they’ve done their team activities early. That actually works to our advantage, as we can celebrate spooky season by analyzing the best ‘fits we’ve seen. And, because we love Halloween costumes overall, we’ll give love to some honourable mentions, too. Nothing too scary, though, like having to survive a 9โ7 game.
Without further ado, here’s your most scary-good Oilers Halloween costumes of 2026.
The ghosts of the top five (AKA the Honourable Mentions)
First, a nod to some of the other confirmed costumes that just missed the mark for this list. Photos for the first two are included in one of the top five entries.
Isaac “Ike” Howard and his partner, Holly Mingo, went as the Disney versions of Hercules and Megara. It doesn’t get any mightier than Hercules. And Howard is looking pretty mighty on the ice these days, in a fourth-line role.
Fellow countrymen Vasily Podkolzin and Shakir Mukhamadullin teamed up with their significant others on a throwback to 35 years ago. This observer appreciates throwbacks, being a nostalgia head and all.
And not to be outdone, Oilers mascot Hunter the Lynx became “Hunter the Beast” for Halloween, going full Disney this year. Normally, the Disney stuff should be saved for the Anaheim Ducks, especially with their rumoured Hometown Remix jersey. But Hunter just rocks in general, so we’ll applaud him for pulling this off very well.
The least despicable guy possible (Nuge) decided to summon Gru
Move over, Derek Lalonde: there’s someone else in hockey circles vying to be called “Gru.โ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went for Halloween as the central Despicable Me villain. Not something you’d imagine from The Nuge at first, but then you consider his lighthearted personality and it all makes sense.
It’s not an original costume, but it’s still pulled off well. Not sure if Nugent-Hopkins could ever pull off being bald, since he’s like Paul Kariya and simply never ages. But at least we got a sort of a glimpse!
Stay classy, Edmonton: Colton Dach goes for the Anchorman nod
Something about the Edmonton kids and costumes, eh? Colton Dach commences this ranking, by giving us a little bit of Ron Burgundy, the titular “Anchorman” played by Will Ferrell. Colton’s girlfriend, Ava, accordingly went as Veronica Corningstone.
Appearance-wise, this is pretty solid overall. Now, we just need to get Colton onto a TSN curling broadcast, to see if he can truly replicate Mr. Burgundy’s aura. Or, at the very least, just get him to try his hand at anchoring one of the local six o’clock newscasts in this city.
Also included in that tweet, by the way, is the #3-ranked costume set…
He & Celeste weren’t Home Alone at the party, but Draisaitl got creative
In-game, Leon Draisaitl can be pretty rough around the edges. That “game” apparently doesn’t apply to just hockey, as he went for Home Alone villain Marv. His wife Celeste portrayed the other one of the Wet Bandits, Harry.
The classic pop-culture references are always the best. Full disclosure, this observer dressed as an animated kids’ show character, so movie and TV references accordingly made this list. However, the top two took Halloween to the next level.
Call him Colonel: McDavid goes with a chicken-themed Sanders getup
The player with the most finger-lickin’-good passes in the game decided to be the guy with the most finger-lickin’-good fried chicken. Connor McDavid, white suit and all, dressed up as Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harlan Sanders this year. Wife Lauren corresponded with a fantastic chicken costume.
Connor and Lauren did a really stellar job with this entry. Sometimes, even the superstars can appreciate a little bit of takeout food, unless you’re Nathan MacKinnon. More interestingly, if you ordered a side fries with that chicken, all you need to do to pass along a Halloween scare to Connor is sneak a ketchup packet into the bag.
Mathieu wants Big (championship) Rings with his winning costume
This year’s winner went as one of the more controversial personalities out there currently. Mathieu Joseph decided to be notorious rapper Drake for Halloween, with his girlfriend Emy-Jade as the goth personality Pinkchyu. If you’re not fully in tune with that story, don’t worry; neither is this observer. It involves a significant age gap, that much is known.
What makes this the winner is that Joseph actually looks more like Drake, than Drake himself does. Seriously, get this guy out to a karaoke night, and see how well he can sing “One Dance” or “God’s Plan.โ If his musical talent is as top-tier as his costume game, he might have to headline a Rogers Place concert.
