For the second time this season, the Edmonton Oilers have summoned forward Noah Philp to the NHL. Tuesday afternoon, the team announced they have recalled him from the Bakersfield Condors.

As of yet, it does not appear that the team has any injuries or a corresponding move to send someone down. The Oilers had been running with a short roster all season and had the extra roster space available to make this move, and the cap space available from Evander Kane’s LTIR pool.
Philp has had a standout season with the Condors, earning a big role in the team’s middle-six forward group as well as plenty of special teams time. He’s been one of the team’s main penalty killers and has appeared many times on the second powerplay unit. He has nine goals and 17 points in 29 games in the AHL, with one assist in three games in the NHL. That assist was his first NHL point.
Where will Noah Philp play in the Oilers’ lineup?
After much debate through training camp and the early season regarding Philp’s place in the lineup, Derek Ryan won the fourth line centre battle and has been there for most of the season. But, as Ryan begins to find himself as a healthy scratch on a more regular basis, the Oilers will need to find new life in that role. Enter, Noah Philp.
In his short stint in the NHL earlier this season, Philp was impressive in the role. His skillset with speed, smarts, and situational awareness helped him fit right in. Ideally, he will be able to provide an offensive boost to the fourth line while providing a valuable addition to Edmonton’s penalty kill.
The timing of this move indicates some greater aspirations for the organization. We are nearing the trade deadline season where the Oilers will have to solidify their roster to fill some remaining holes. The fourth-line center spot was one of them. Bob Stauffer is confident that Philp will get a fair shot in this role for the time being, so the team can evaluate him and whether or not they need to make a play on the trade market for an improvement.
