Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 74: Edmonton held scoreless as the Stars come out on top

The Edmonton Oilers were shutout for just the third time this season. One of the NHL’s top offences just got completely goalied by a red-hot goaltender in Jake Oettinger, who’s now posted two shutouts in a row. Sometimes that’s just how it goes.

Charts and observations from the game are below!

Game events

  • The Oilers had a slight edge in shots in the game, but obviously, this did not lead to the same results on the scoreboard.
  • Away from shots, the Oilers were more physical than the Stars, while Dallas eked out a few more faceoff wins.
  • The bigger differential came in blocks as the Oilers only had seven to their credit while the Stars more than tripled that total with 22 of their own.

  • The Oilers were down early in the first period but were still in the game for quite some time.
  • However, instead of finding a game-tying goal, they gave up four more goals in short order in the second half of the second period.
  • The game-winning goal for Dallas came just two minutes into the game.

All situations Corsi

  • Edmonton had a slight edge in shot attempts throughout the game, but they were also chasing the score all game long.
  • The long green box there wasn’t an extended power play for the Stars, it just reflects Darnell Nurse’s abuse of officials penalty.
  • The Oilers had a high number of shots in the net-front area but were unable to get anything past Oettinger.
  • The Stars had more variation in their shot locations but all of their goals scored came from in close.

5v5 Corsi

  • The Oilers ultimately gave up four goals at 5v5, which is simply not good enough.
  • Their defence was shaky and some questionable plays were seen on the ice, including a bad pinch from Nurse which led to a 4-on-1 for the Star’s third goal of the game.
  • Despite getting some good net-front shots the Oilers actually had a bit of a void in between the faceoff circles. Some more volume in that area could have opened up more angles to beat Oettinger, but we’ll never know.
  • The Oilers’ defence was not good against Dallas as they didn’t do much to bail out Calvin Pickard.
