Edmonton Oilers

Connor McDavid is now the NHL points leader despite his slow start to the season

If you had told someone back in September that come the end of March, Connor McDavid would be leading the league in scoring I don’t think a single soul would bat an eye at you. But flashback to November and ask the same question, many would have had a lot of hesitancy at saying that would happen.

Despite everything that has happened this season, with three points against the Anaheim Ducks in today’s 6–1 win, McDavid finds himself sitting atop the league lead in points.

A season for the ages for McDavid

McDavid should be the clubhouse leader when it comes to Hart Trophy candidacy due mainly to the fact that he is the league’s most valuable player night in and night out.

In October and November, not a soul on earth could deny that something was bothering McDavid. Not at 100%, his lack of production was keeping the Oilers from reaching their full potential. At full strength? McDavid has willed the Oilers into being a potential Pacific Division winner and a Stanley Cup favourite.

Sitting at the top of the lead league in points gives him three straight seasons with 120 points or more, and he now just sits four assists away from being the fourth player in NHL history to put up 100 assists in one season.

He has helped turn Zach Hyman into a 50-goal scorer and made the rest of the MVP candidates in the NHL look like they have been jogging all season while McDavid sprints by.

It is simply outstanding to witness this level of greatness.
