Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 70: Edmonton picks up overtime win over Jets to end road trip on high note

The Edmonton Oilers lost the first two games of their three-game road trip but had a chance to close it out with a win against the Winnipeg Jets. While Zach Hyman had just reached the 50-goal mark on the year, he had another milestone in sight with his 200th career goal being next on the docket.

The Oilers won the game in overtime, and it was thanks to Hyman’s 200th goal. What a week, what a month, what a year it has been for Hyman.

Charts and observations from the game are below!

Game events

  • The Oilers posted 42 shots on net but couldn’t get more than three goals past Connor Hellebuyck in regulation.
  • Edmonton was also the more physical team with 38 hits to their credit.
  • This was a penalty-laden game as there were nine total power plays and a fight to boot.

  • The Oilers had a 3–1 lead after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins snapped a 13-game scoreless drought.
  • The Jets responded with two goals exactly a minute a part in the third period to tie it up.
  • As mentioned, Hyman’s 200th career goal came in emphatic fashion as a game-winning overtime goal is about as good as it gets.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers started off the game a bit slower as they barely had any shot attempts before they took their first penalty.
  • However, the Oilers clawed back and took the lead.
  • In a four-minute double-minor to Connor Brown, the Oilers defended it greatly as the Jets barely got any shots off at all.
  • The late-game high-sticking call against Nugent-Hopkins was successfully killed off as the Oilers dodged what could have been a gut-punch defeat.
  • Edmonton scored three goals from in close compared to the Jets’ two.
  • Both teams favoured shooting from the left side more, but it’s strange how little volume the Jets had on the right side.

5v5 Corsi

  • As the game progressed, the Oilers kept the pressure on. The Jets’ last 5v5 shot came midway through the third period while Edmonton controlled the final frame up until the penalty.
  • Edmonton had much more volume at 5v5 in front of the net. They just faced a tough goalie in Hellebuyck as they could have easily scored more goals on a more average goaltender based on their shot locations.
