Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 59: Edmonton scores six against Penguins in dominant win

The Edmonton Oilers wanted and got their perfect weekend. It included doubling a two-game win streak into a four-game streak, and not just getting ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights for second in the Pacific Division, but also building immediate separation.

With the Oilers playing a back-to-back set first on the road against the Seattle Kraken, then making a quick pitstop at home to face the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team went two-for-two and got four big standing points. They’ll now set off for a four-game Eastern Conference road trip, but they are riding strong momentum with their latest dominant showing over the Penguins.

Charts and observations from the huge win are below!

Game events

  • Both teams played games on Saturday. As mentioned, the Oilers beat the Kraken while the Penguins blew a third period lead against the Calgary Flames. One team were ready to play and it was definitely not Pittsburgh.
  • The Oilers posted 37 shots while allowing only 23. In this regard, Edmonton had a better game on Sunday than they did on Saturday.

  • Zach Hyman scored his 41st and 42nd goals of the season to tie Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers for second in the league.
  • Connor McDavid extended his home point streak to 25 straight games, putting himself and the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon in elite history this season being the only two players to have done so.
  • Brett Kulak has chipped in on offence lately with the game-winner against the Kraken and now picking up two assists in this routing of the Penguins.

All situations Corsi

  • This game was all Edmonton from start to finish, with their best display coming in the second period with four goals to essentially put this game away before the third period came around.
  • No goals were scored on the power play by either team.
  • Unfortunately, no shutout would be had for Calvin Pickard as the Penguins got on the board with less than eight minutes to go.
  • This game is essentially a coach’s dream in terms of what the Oilers did. They dominated the slot with many high-danger chances right in front of the crease or even in it, while they blocked the Penguins out entirely on the other end of the ice.

5v5 Corsi

  • All seven goals came at 5v5, and this game had the Oilers very much suppressing the Penguins’ 5v5 offence, especially in the first period.
  • The Oilers’ best 5v5 push gave the the opening goal, while the Pens’ didn’t have much of anything until the third period when it was too late for them.
  • Again, since all goals were at 5v5, it’s a similar story of pure domination here from the Oilers.
  • However, comparing the 5v5 plot to the all situations chart, it’s clear the Oilers also prevented the Penguins from accomplishing much of anything on their power play as well, making for a strong showing from the Oilers’ penalty kill.
