The Pacific Division has been a rollercoaster all season long. The Edmonton Oilers continue to make up major ground from their awful start and have now jumped to second in the Pacific with a win over the Seattle Kraken.
With the Vegas Golden Knights struggling, the Oilers quickly moved on from their own losing streak just to reestablish a winning streak. Their third win in a row gave them sole possession for second, and now they’ll spend the final quarter of the season defending home ice for the playoffs.
Charts and observations from the Oilers’ big win over the Kraken are below!
Game events
- Somewhat of a rarity, the Oilers were held to fewer than 25 shots.
- The Oilers were stingy on defence with 21 blocks to their credit, but were not very physical as they only posted five total hits as a team.
Goals
Goal | Assists | Time | Score |
---|---|---|---|
Leon Draisaitl | Connor McDavid | 10:12 | 2nd | EDM 1 – 0 SEA |
Brett Kulak | Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl | 8:02 | 3rd | EDM 2 – 0 SEA |
Eeli Tolvanen (PPG) | Jared McCann, Vince Dunn | 13:23 | 3rd | EDM 2 – 1 SEA |
- The game-opening goal from Leon Draisaitl was his 30th goal of the season! Connor McDavid extended his point streak to 10 games with the assist.
- The Oilers got their game-winning goal from an unexpected name as it came from Brett Kulak. His third goal of the season proved to be a big one as it gave Edmonton their third win in a row.
- Stuart Skinner was just minutes away from a shutout but the Kraken broke his shutout bid with under seven minutes to go. Other than that, he was solid.
All situations Corsi
- It’s one thing for the Oilers to be outshot, it’s another for them to end the game with fewer shot attempts than their opponent. The Oilers were just not as good in the offensive zone as usual.
- Edmonton’s best defensive period was there was a stretch of about 10 minutes without a single shot attempt from the Kraken.
- The Oilers were not great at funnelling their shots to the front of the net. It’s not common for the Oilers to be kept to the outside, but they did manage to get their goals from afar.
- On the other end of the ice, the Oilers were good enough at preventing the Kraken from getting too much in the slot as well.
5v5 Corsi
- The Oilers trailed in 5v5 Corsi pretty much the whole game but weren’t scored on at 5v5 at all.
- The 5v5 shot locations looked more in Edmonton’s favour, even without the goals. The Oilers’ defence played well enough to prevent the Kraken from generating too many high-danger chances.
