Edmonton Oilers sign Corey Perry to one-year, $775K deal

Breaking news out of the NHL today as the Edmonton Oilers have announced the signing of Corey Perry to a one-year, $775k deal plus performance bonuses.

What happened to Corey Perry

This addition has been rumoured for quite a while now, after Perry’s contract was terminated by the Chicago Blackhawks on November 29th. Nobody knows for sure why Perry and the Blackhawks parted ways, but the official press release gave enough details for anyone to know that it was not a good situation:

After an internal investigation, the Chicago Blackhawks have determined that Corey Perry has engaged in conduct that is unacceptable, and in violation of both the terms of his standard player’s contract and the Blackhawks’ internal policies intended to promote professional and safe work environments.

Chicago Blackhawks official statement

This does nothing but paint a very ugly picture of Perry’s conduct in Chicago, but clearly not bad enough for the Oilers to rule out signing him.

A new start in Edmonton for Perry

Perry is one of the most accomplished active players in the league:

  • Stanley Cup, 2006-07
  • Hart Memorial Trophy, 2010-11
  • Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, 2010-11
  • Four-time NHL All-star
  • Olympic Gold Medal, 2006 & 2010
  • IIHF World Championship Gold Medal, 2016
  • World Cup of Hockey Gold Medal, 2016
  • IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship Gold Medal, 2005

He will add sandpaper and experience to an Oilers team with Stanley Cup aspirations. Hopefully, his antics off the ice don’t ruin what has been a fantastic run for the Oilers.
