Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 40: Depth scoring powers comeback against Maple Leafs as Edmonton wins 11th straight game

The Edmonton Oilers looked to continue their winning ways with their win streak now in the double digits. Facing off against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Oilers had an All-Star-laden showdown, but it’d be Edmonton’s depth scorers that ultimately got them the win.

Charts and observations from the historic win are below!

Game events

  • Edmonton was highly physical in this game with 32 total hits—much more than they usually post. Their average is at about 18 hits per game so far this season.
  • Toronto had a much larger share of blocks to their credit, while Edmonton struggled with 22 giveaways.

  • As mentioned, depth scoring got Edmonton the win. Derek Ryan and Ryan McLeod’s third period goals tied and won the game for the team.
  • The Oilers’ first lead came with just over three minutes left, but that’s all they needed to secure the win.
  • Zach Hyman had a goal called back as the Oilers were offside. Hyman and called-back goals in 2023–24: the collaboration absolutely no one asked for.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers had a slow start after Stuart Skinner allowed that first goal against, but then they ramped things up midway through the first. Onwards from their first and only power play, they controlled the flow of the game.
  • Skinner’s first-shot-first-goal blunder was immediately forgiven as he kept the Oilers in the game as the Leafs had their share of chances.
  • The Oilers were highly effective with their shots. Virtually every shot was high-danger. This team simply knows how to drive to the net and generate shots from in close.
  • Toronto had a fairly strong offensive effort themselves, but compared to the Oilers, the Leafs suddenly look average.

5v5 Corsi

  • With 56 minutes played at 5v5, the even strength story pretty much matches the all-situations story. Both teams had shot attempts in their power plays, but the game was dominated at 5v5 by Edmonton.
  • Edmonton tallied 68 shot attempts at 5v5 to Toronto’s 48. The Oilers finishing any game with at least one 5v5 shot attempt per minute seems like a good bet on most nights.
