The Edmonton Oilers were looking to get back into the win column after an upset loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. They had a fairly good shot at doing so facing off against another team in the NHL’s basement. The Chicago Blackhawks came to town for the final tilt before the break. The Oilers had to make a roster change that saw Stuart Skinner out due to illness, so University of Alberta Golden Bears goaltender Matthew Berlin was called upon with an amateur tryout contract to play as their backup.
The Oilers got ahead early in the first, and once the Blackhawks responded in the second, the home team immediately answered back. In total, the team were tied for about six and a half minutes, the rest of the way, the Oilers led. Once the score was inflated to a safe 7–3 lead with minutes to go, the Oilers made magic happen on the ice.
