Edmonton Oilers Prospects Roundup: Can Connor Clattenburg climb up to a roster spot?

With the 2026–27 NHL regular season officially underway, all eyes are back on the NHL. The Edmonton Oilers regular roster is banged up, with six individuals already on the IR or LTIR. These injuries means more room for Oilers rookies, as Josh Samanski, Owen Michaels, and Isaac Howard have all made the team out of camp or have been recently called up.

With a new NHL season on the horizon, let’s take a look in the system for the Edmonton Oilers.

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2002 or earlier.

Connor Clattenburg, Forward, Bakersfield Condors

Where Clattenburg sits currently

The 21-year-old forward was one of the biggest surprises for the Oilers last season, as the 2024 fifth-rounder appeared in five games with the big club, and endeared himself with the fan base. Both feats are quite rare for a late round pick in their first season of professional hockey, but the 6’2” wrecking ball of a power-forward achieved.

The accomplishments aside, Clattenburg did not stay in the NHL after an injury kept him on the shelf right before the 2025 holidays. Then an eventual reassignment to the Condors produced limited momentum for the OHL alumnus. In the second half of the season, Clattenburg posted only a single goal and assist across seventeen AHL games, and had inconsistent ice time.

This inconsistent ice time largely came from all of his fights, penalties, and limited soft skill.

So where does the Arnprior, Ontario product go from here?

Areas of improvement

Simply put, Clattenburgs game needs to round out more before the young forward can push for a roster spot.

At the NHL level, Clattenburg has shown real ability to be an energy bottom-six forward, which comes through his absolute selflessness, high motor, and intense physicality.

Clattenburg has even become somewhat of a team favourite for his fighting, and rough and tumble play, which are genuinely rare assets in the modern day NHL.

The next step forward for the prospect would be further growth in his defensive instincts, and puck skills. With basic enough mobility already, and excellent gritty play further improvements in senses will allow him to adequately reduce risks, cut opponent opportunities, and be a more reliable forechecking/in-zone presence.

Growth in offensive instincts, and puck skills (passing placement, vision, and option creation), would unlock further support elements in his game. The more supporting elements Clattenburg can get, the better off he is in terms of point production. The gritty power forward won’t be a genuine offensive creator at the NHL level, so play support is a good compromise.

Growth in these areas would make the Ontario product more of a complete threat.
