Edmonton Oilers sign defender Tomáš Cibulka to two-year entry-level contract

Within this competitive window, the Edmonton Oilers have had next to no draft capital, and what they have had is late round picks. Despite that, the Oilers have been able to maintain a somewhat promising prospect pool by looking in different areas. The focus on unsigned free agents who may have aged out of the draft, but still show promise, continues this spring.

On Friday morning, the organization announced the signing of Czech defender Tomáš Cibulka to a two-year entry-level contract beginning in the 2026–27 season.

Cibulka, a 21-year old defender, has played the last two seasons in the top Czech league where he has 42 points in 90 games. Prior to that, he went undrafted after spending four seasons in the QMJHL. Cibulka represented his country at the 2024 World Junior Classic, scoring two goals in seven games.

How does Cibulka bulk-up the Oilers prospect pool?

The biggest weakness right now in the Oilers’ prospect pool is defence. They only have one or two players that project to potentially be regular NHLers. The addition of Cibulka helps provide more opportunity for contributing prospects in the system.

Fitting in well with the general theme of the other defensive prospects, Cibulka’s biggest strength is his offensive upside. He was the leading defensive scorer on his Czech league team two seasons ago, and the second leading scoring defender this season.

He is a bit undersized at six-feet tall, but is described as having solid skating and edge work to help his agility and positioning.

As he already played in the QMJHL for years, his transition over to the minor leagues in North America next season should be far easier.

We could likely expect him to start with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets to get adjusted, but it should be no surprise to see him contributing in Bakersfield with the AHL’s Condors. The exciting group of prospects the Condors are icing this season would be the ideal fit for Cibulka to play with to develop further.
