With so many different people talking about our Edmonton Oilers, it can be tricky to keep up. Each week, we here at The Oil Rig will compile some of the biggest and best news, updates, rumours, and discussions for you to keep up-to-date on all things Oilers.
This week saw the boys go through a very wild and disappointing road trip and a fun, high-scoring game at home. During this week, we’ve gotten updates on injuries, lineup changes, and potential moves the team could make when said players return from the IR stint.
Quick hit Edmonton Oilers updates
Kasperi Kapanen: Forward Kasperi Kapanen was placed on injured reserve early on Thursday which means he’ll miss at least one week. Kris Knoblauch does think it’ll be longer than that, however. Kapanen plays a role on the Oilers fourth line and penalty kill units while bringing some speed and physicality to the team. A bit of a loss, but not one that absolutely changes the dynamic of the roster.
Zach Hyman: Since being forced out of Game 4 of the Dallas Stars series, Zach Hyman’s been trying to battle back from his wrist injury. Knoblauch has since updated his status to potentially return November 1.
Isaac Howard and Matthew Savoie: Despite the vast majority of Oilers Twitter screaming for the coach to pair Howard and Savoie with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, Knoblauch instead went McDrai with Howard in the bottom-six and Savoie playing with a combination of players to start the season. In the last half of the Montreal Canadiens game, the Oilers finally went with the combos fans have been asking for and it worked. They’re slated to run the same lines Saturday night versus the Seattle Kraken.
Roslovic traded already?
Even though it’s been six games, many are keeping an eye on what the Oilers do with Jack Roslovic. Roslovic has an assist through six games with the Oilers and while he definitely has not been bad, it’s taking a while for the forward to get his feet going. This is understandable due to the lack of training camp.
Roslovic has slowly started to get better but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill. With Hyman’s looming return on November 1, it’s interesting the Oilers put a trade clause in place for that date, especially with four teams, which were probably the finalists for Roslovic’s services. Do I think he gets dealt that quick? No. Do I think it’s a possibility when the calendar flips to 2026 and the role hasn’t worked out quite well for him? Yeah, I do.

Oilers potentially moving a defenceman and Janmark
Edmonton also has a lot of blueliners, including some they like at AHL Bakersfield. That’s another team that could move one at some point.

As I alluded to last week, the Oilers have a surplus of defencemen. Alec Regula is going to return soon which means one of Troy Stecher or Ty Emberson is on the outs. Stecher has played in four games this season, but has taken a minor penalty in three of those. He has looked way out of place to start the year compared to how strong he was anchoring the bottom four last season. Emberson has still been a mainstay on the penalty kill, has drawn into eight games. Even though I depise plus-minus, he’s a +4. I think it’s super likely Stecher is the odd man out.
Mattias Janmark being traded potentially should not be a shock. He makes way too much for his role, production, and he really doesn’t do a lot out there. With two years left at a $1.45M cap hit and a 10-team no trade list, it may be super hard to find a potential suitor for him. Add on to the fact that he’s currently injured and has no timetable for a return and you’re looking at a trade where you probably have to attach an asset to get rid of him. We’ll see though… when there’s smoke… there’s fire.
