Edmonton Oilers prospect roundup: A flurry of moves continues with roster cuts

Another week, and the theme of player movement continues. The Edmonton Oilers have made substantial cuts to their preseason roster, including 19 players being sent to the Bakersfield Condors. Elsewhere in the organization a handful of prospects begin their 2025–26 campaigns.

Let’s take a look at everything that has happened within the Oilers organization this past week.

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.

Oilers training camp is a war zone for the rookies

With the regular season looming, many possible first time Oilers remain with the NHL club for its training camp. This includes recent signees, Quinn Hutson, Josh Samanski, Arto Leppanen, David Tomasek, Damien Carfagna all stand as possible players on the Oilers roster come opening night.

All bring unique styles of play, with Hutson, and Leppanen bringing more senses, offensive flair, and playmaking. Tomasek and Samanski bring more two-way defensively responsible complete games. Last but not least, Carfagna is more of a transition defender with quality puck skills and breakout ability.

All of which have had solid training camp performances, and in the event of players like Curtis Lazar, Max Jones, or Troy Stecher getting cut, it is likely that one of the previously mentioned players take their spot.

Two rookie-locks for the Oilers roster remain Matthew Savoie and Isaac Howard as well.

Channeling a common theme within these features, the questions remain of what type of identity the Oilers organization wants for their bottom-six/third-pairing players.
