Edmonton Oilers

Former Edmonton Oilers who have been eliminated in Round 1

In the 2024 NHL offseason, the Edmonton Oilers moved on from the likes of Warren Foegele, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Foegele was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, while Broberg and Holloway were picked up off offer sheets by the St. Louis Blues.

These changes left a lot to be wondered for the Oilers as they headed into the 2025 regular season. With something to be desired after their Cup run in 2024, the Oilers ended up losing strong young guys with a bright future and picked up older and slower players in the process.

With the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs now in Round 2, it’s time to take a look at how these three players did with their respective teams in the regular season and what their first round playoff matchup was like.

Warren Foegele with the Los Angeles Kings

In his 2025 regular season, Warren Foegele had a career year across the board in terms of goals, assists, points, plus-minus, TOI and game winning goals. In a complete 82 game season, Foegele produced 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points. He was also +36, had seven game winning goals and an average time on ice of 16:10 (two minutes longer than his previous best.) A reminder for you all, is that Foegele had said he wanted to go to a competitive team before he was traded.

Markham, Ontario, 29-year-old Warren Foegele played in the Stanley Cup playoffs in his first year with his new team. In the six-game series against the Edmonton Oilers, Foegele produced one goal and two assists for three points in round one. Oil Country knows what happened next, as the Los Angeles Kings who once had a 2–0 series lead, would go on to lose the next four straight against the Oilers.

Philip Broberg with the St. Louis Blues

In his fourth career NHL season, Philip Broberg has played three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and this year in “music” city with the St. Louis Blues. Broberg this year, shattered his previous career best across the board as well. After potting only one goal in both the 2021–22 and the 2022–23 seasons, Broberg would go scoreless in 12 games with the Oilers before tucking eight goals in 68 games in 2025. With seven assists in 2022–23, Broberg would go on to get 21 assists in the 68 games that he played this year. He had a great plus-minus and ATOI with +21 and 20:30 respectively.

The 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs were a battle between the presidents trophy winning Winnipeg Jets and the end of season hot streak St. Louis Blues. Broberg in the playoffs finished with one goal and one assist for two points in the seven-game series. I say finished because the Blues played very well in the series against the Jets, but couldn’t hold on long enough to win Game 7 and get past the first round.

Dylan Holloway with the St. Louis Blues

In only his third career NHL season, Dylan Holloway played two seasons with the Oilers and this year with the Blues, too. I’ll be writing about another career year storyline, and what Holloway brought for the Blues this year as well. After being claimed on the offer sheet by the Blues and playing almost a full season, Holloway crushed it with 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in his 77 games played.

Holloway has not played an official NHL game since April 3, 2025 where he played against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He did not even play a game against the Jets in the 2025 playoffs because he has been sidelined with a lower-body injury. (LBI) Holloway is currently expected week-to-week, so it’s really hard to say if we will see play. Unfortunately, we will not see him play until the fall because the Blues were just eliminated in seven games by the Jets on Star Wars day, May 4.

The “force” was not with them

I sat here writing about these three guys and how they did in the regular season with their respective teams, but in the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, they have all been eliminated and will not see any more playoff action. I find it pretty interesting how the Oilers after losing these players realistically got worse, but still somehow found a way to get by Foegele and the Los Angeles Kings in six games.

It is definitely safe to say that these guys have a bright future with their new teams. For the Oilers, who have been called older and slower since before the season began, they get to continue their quest to the top of the mountain where the shiny, silver, Stanley Cup stands waiting for them.
