Edmonton Oilers prospect Samuel Jonsson wins goaltender of the year award in the Hockey Allsvenskan

Maybe the Edmonton Oilers have some prospects that are better than anticipated? Goaltending prospect Samuel Jonsson has just won goaltender of the year in the Hockey Allsvenskan league in Sweden after an incredibly dominant performance. The Hockey Allsvenskan is the minor league to the SHL, where Jonsson has dressed for games in the past but has yet to play. Jonsson plays for BIK Karlskoga.

Jonsson’s season so far

Jonsson, now 21 years old, posted a 17–6–0 record with some unbelievable stats. He finished the season with a 1.88 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. But most impressively, believe this, he had six shutouts—in just 24 games played. And four of those were in consecutive games where he saved a total of 95 shots in a row.

Jonsson was a fifth-round pick of the Oilers back in 2022. Until this breakout developmental season, he had not been prominent on the Oilers’ prospect rankings lists. This was partly due to a major injury suffered last season, limiting him to just eight total games in the 2023–24 season.

He has recovered extremely well and returned from injury determined to prove himself. And that, he definitely has.

With a weakness in net and in the prospect pool overall, this year’s performance from Jonsson should create a ton of buzz for Oilers fans. The past presumption was that Olivier Rodrigue was the next goalie and the best in the development system. Jonsson may have just earned himself a place atop that list. We should be keeping a close eye on Jonsson from this point on as he continues his development.
