Well it’s playoff time for most leagues outside of the NHL/AHL umbrella. There is plenty of things to watch for as Edmonton Oilers fans: for the North American fans the OHL playoffs, which kick off this week; or the European fans the KHL and Allsvenskan playoffs also feature notable Oilers prospects.
Playoff time means there’s lots to dive into. Lets take a look.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.
The five best playoff organizations featuring Oilers prospects
- London Knights, (OHL), 55–11–2
The Knights boast the likes of two of the Oilers best prospects in the forms of 2024 first-rounder, Sam O’Reilly, and possible 2024 seventh round steal, William Nicholl. Look for their high pace offence to light up the OHL this playoffs season, as the OHL powerhouse looks to challenge for a Memorial Cup this year.
First-round opponent: eighth seeded Owen Sound Attack. Game 1 takes place Friday, March 28
2. Barrie Colts, (OHL), 42–22–4
The Colts also tout two prospects from the Oilers pipeline. These prospects would be none other than 2023 second rounder, Beau Akey, and 2024 sixth rounder Dalyn Wakely. Look for Barrie to play a high compete physical game. They are poised to be a tough out in the OHL’s Eastern Conference.
First-round opponent: seventh seeded, Niagara IceDogs. Game 1 takes place Thursday March 27
3. Flint Firebirds, (OHL), 29–34–5
Much like the first two teams on this list Flint has two Oilers prospects which makes them worth checking up on. These prospects are Firebirds starter, Nathaniel Day, and star forward Connor Clattenburg who look to upset the third seeded Kitchener Rangers. If the Firebirds go deep this could drastically improve both prospects stock.
First-round opponent: third seeded, Kitchener Rangers. Game 1 takes place Friday, March 28
4. BIK Karlskoga, (Hockey Allsvenskan), 32–6–4–10 (win-OT win, OT/SO loss, loss)
The most recent Allsvenskan goaltender of the year and Oilers prospect, Samuel Jonsson, has carried the second tier Swedish team to the quarterfinals in the Allsvenskan playoffs. Not much else to say.
Quarterfinals opponent: IK Oskarshamn. Game 6 is Wednesday March 26
5. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, (first in the KHL), 39–6–4–1
Oilers 2001 born prospect, Maxim Beryozkin looks to prove himself this playoff run, and with the strong season that his club has had they should make it deep.
Quarterfinals opponent: Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod
