Edmonton Oilers prospect roundup: Who to expect to get some NHL icetime

This past week was a low-event time for the Edmonton Oilers prospect pipeline. CHL seasons wrap up later this week, and awards are starting to be handed out to European players. As playoffs start to kickoff expect teams like Lokomotiv Yarlslavl (Maxim Beryozkin), BIK Karlskoga (Samuel Jonsson), and the London Knights, (William Nicholl and Sam O’Reilly) to be main contenders in their leagues playoffs.

Lets get into the events this week.

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.

Oilers in the system most likely to see NHL games

With playoff season coming up, in case of injury here are the five most likely Oilers to be called up:

  1. James Hamblin: a shifty NHL ready scorer that can provide quality secondary offence from the oilers bottom six.
  2. Matthew Savoie: there’s little this prospect doesn’t have from quality skating, to puck skills, and high end senses. The furture top-six forward could really prove his worth if given the opportunity.
  3. Derek Ryan: the experienced vet has bounced around the NHL and AHL a bit this season, in event of an injury expect his name to be one of the first called up.
  4. Josh Brown: the physical defensive orientated defender does not light up the scoresheet, but proves to be a capable and responsible defender that the coaches could trust.
  5. Noah Philp: expect the former University of Alberta Golden Bear to be a reliable fourth line centre for Edmonton if called up. Grit, and energy are his focal points.
