With the trade deadline in the rearview, the Edmonton Oilers are looking to be cup contenders and that comes with the price of picks and prospects. Prospects Shane Lachance, Carl Berglund, and Max Wanner have been moved out, and Czech forward Petr Hauser has been moved into the prospect pipeline.
Lets take a look at where the prospects in the Oilers organization sit post-deadline.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.
The best remaining prospects in Edmonton’s system
With the trade deadline in the past, let’s take a look at the state of the prospect pool for the Edmonton Oilers.
Best all around prospect: Matthew Savoie
There’s little this player doesn’t do. He’s got the skating, the compete, and the senses/puck skills to make an impact at the NHL level. It’s only a matter of time until he does.
Best defenceman prospect: Beau Akey
This Barrie Colts defender is a play driver, with acute offensive senses, and quality skating and play creation from the rush and the backend. Don’t be surprised if he gets a game or two with the big club next season.
Most Exciting Prospect: Sam O’Reilly
The London Knights forward has been a menace for the OHL powerhouse this year. Relentless compete, physicality, and pace makes him a threat anytime he’s playing. This is something the Oilers could use more of. Expect him to challenge for a roster spot in another year or two.
Most Surprising Prospect: Samuel Jonsson
This Swedish goaltender has shown some very positive development this past season, and although he’s quite raw Jonsson keeps stepping up in big moments for his club. Expect him to battle for a SHL spot next season and depending on how he transitions to the next level, he could end up in North America soon.
Edmonton Oilers prospect updates
AHL
- The Bakersfield Condors sit eighth in their division, with a 24–20–9 record. They are 4–4–2 in their past ten games, and are 3–1–0 in March.
- James Hamblin and Savoie remain the players to watch on the Condors, and two candidates for NHL stints to end off the current NHL season.
- Berglund and Wanner have moved on from the Condors. Max Jones will likely be a player that gets called up and sent down over the next little while.
ECHL
- Fort Wayne Komets are fourth in their conference, and second in their divison with a 34–18–5 record on the season.
- They are 5–2–3 in their past ten, as they prepare themselves for playoffs.
- There is one Edmonton Oilers prospect on the team, in the form of Connor Ungar.
Europe
- Jonsson appeared in two games splitting them, while also posting a shutout in his game against Västerås IK.
- Tomas Mazura remains very composed and discipline with only two penalty minutes across 20 pro games. He’s also producing on the scoresheet at a 0.60 PPG pace.
NCAA
- Luca Munzenberger potted his first goal since December 13, this past week against the UConn Huskies on the March 6.
- Paul Fischer is on a two-game point streak, posting an assist in his last two games, both against the University of Minnesota.
- Joel Maatta is averaging close to 18 minutes of TOI per game. Since the last prospect update, he’s posted two points across four games.
- Matt Copponi has only appeared in two games since the last post, and produced two assists and a +2 rating. Copponi is a player that the Oilers have to decide wether or not they will sign him in the near future.
OHL
- Nathaniel Day continues to be a workhorse appearing in Flint’s every game except one since the last post.
- Beau Akey (two points in six games) and Dalyn Wakely also continue to be workhorses for Barrie. Wakely was out with an injury and drew back into the lineup for their March 7 game, only appearing in two games during that stretch.
- In Brady Stonehouse’s last ten games, he’s only gone pointless in three of them, posting a combined nine points across that span. Talk about heating up.
- O’Reilly is on an absurd six game point streak, with 14 points total, good for 2.3PPG over that span.
Russia
- Defender Nikita Yevseyev has been injured in his most recent game. Expect him to miss a couple of games as the KHL season comes to an end.
