According to multiple sources, the Edmonton Oilers are adding defenceman John Klingberg to their blueline, as he’s signed a one-year deal with an AAV of $1 million, which also includes $350,000 in potential bonuses. The contract is pro-rated.
Klingberg last played for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, signing a one-year contract with the club, but only appeared in 14 games as he underwent season-ending hip surgery.
The 32-year-old has since made rehab efforts and is making his way back into the NHL. The Oilers were among the frontrunners to add him, and now it’s official. Klingberg has appeared in 633 NHL games in his career, playing for the Leafs, Dallas Stars, Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild

What does Klingberg bring to the table?
At this point in his career, Klingberg isn’t the same player he once was. Since he’s also coming off a major hip injury, expectations for him should remain measured.
Klingberg isn’t going to be a shutdown defensive specialist, but rather he’ll be an intriguing asset on the Oilers’ special teams such as the power play. Expect him to likely get action quarterbacking one of the two power-play units, as that’s been his main asset throughout his entire NHL tenure.
