Edmonton Oilers prospects roundup: Edmonton welcomes Jacob Perreault

One last prospects update before Christmas. The NCAA has gone on break as of the December 15, and the CHL will stop for their own break this week. Lots to catch up on, including one early holiday gift for Edmonton Oilers fans in the form of a new prospect.

There is so much to get into this week- let’s dive right in!

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.

Perrault joins the Oilers system

The Montreal born Jacob Perreault is no stranger to trades after being traded by two NHL teams already in his young career.

After a summer shoulder surgery the right winger started this season in the ECHL with the Trois-Riveres Lions. The Sarnia Sting alumni quickly impressed there by posting at a point per game rate. After this stint in the ECHL he found himself called up to the AHL’s Laval Rockets for six games before the former first rounder would once again find himself on the move again.

This move was to the Oilers organization at Bakersfield.

The 2002 born right winger has the skillset of a prototypical sniper with a two-way forwards edge. He has plenty of soft skill, and his game is highlighted by shooting, puck skills, senses, and compete level.

One of Perreault’s biggest skills? His shot, with its deceptive release, quality accuracy, and diversity of shot (snapshot, and backhand). He has a scorer’s mentality and because of this he adequately scans, and looks for screens intentionally, but does evidently struggle with shot selection and angling.

If Perreault doesn’t want to shoot his passing is just as excellent, as its highlighted by quality handling resulting in passes that are accurate, unexpected, and have good variety to them. This is further benefitted by his vision as he can quickly process play and pass options to create the most dangerous chance against.

With his puck skills he can provide good play support through quality puck protection mechanics or by adding elements of deception to his game, (defender manipulation, pressure relief, and space creation).

Another notable is his compete level, and defensive senses, he is relatively active on the back-check, and can kill chances against before they begin with quality defensive awareness and instincts. He has a high motor, good pressure understanding, body positioning, and decent agility which allows him to create quality routes, and be defensively assertive/responsible.

Some of the limitations with Perreault include his skating (awkward stride recovery, and lower body flection at times), mixed in with crossover problems. Additionally his creativity and play reading can be problems at times too, hinting at a below average offensive poise.

Clearly Oilers management like what they see as he had 22:15 of TOI in his first game with the Condors, and has cemented himself as a lineup regular since, finding a role in the middle six (14-15 minutes per game).

At the age of 22 there is still lots of growth that can happen for the young forward, expect the Oilers to watch him closely as a possible depth piece of the future.

How do you feel about Perreault? Let us know in the comments.
