On Tuesday evening, rumours began swirling that seemed to confirm many Edmonton Oilers fans’ worst fears. Stan Bowman is expected to be named the next general manager of the team.
July 24 update:
Not a great choice for Oilers GM
There are many arguments to be made that Bowman should not be given the opportunity or privilege to be at the helm of an NHL team again after his role in the Chicago Blackhawks’ sexual assault scandal a decade ago. But alas, the Oilers are continuing their trend in recent years of giving controversial people chances.
The writing seems to have been on the wall for this move as immediately upon the general manager’s seat becoming vacant, Bowman’s name was tied to the Oilers. This prompted an announcement from the league reinstating him and making him eligible to take a position once again.
Recently, The Respect Group, co-founded by Sheldon Kennedy, sent out this post on X in regards to Bowman.
The timing of this seemed to be indicating a quick return to the NHL, with a role in the Oilers organization in some capacity being the most likely outcome.
With all of the available general manager capable people on the market, including some off-the-board candidates, the Oilers appear to have selected one with significantly more baggage than most and a history of failing his staff from this role.
Exciting news if true. Likely the most qualified candidate not currently working
