Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers will have to break an 81-year drought to lift the Stanley Cup

After so much hope and promise, and being in the heat of every single game, the Edmonton Oilers find themselves in what may be an insurmountable deficit.

Down 3–0, the Oilers will have to move heaven and earth to have a chance at the Stanley Cup. The Oilers will have to do something that hasn’t been done since 1942.

The 3–0 hole

Throughout NHL history, only four teams have come back from a 3–0 deficit: the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders, the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers, and the 2014 Los Angeles Kings.

Of those teams, the Maple Leafs are the only team to do so in the Stanley Cup Final. This was the first time in NHL history that a Stanley Cup Final went seven games.

That means the Oilers will have to be the first team in nearly 81 years to overcome a similar hole. If anything, it’s clear that there is a chance. It won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. There has even been once in history when a team has come back and won three games after being down 3–0 in the Stanley Cup Final, but the 1945 Detroit Red Wings couldn’t quite get the job done.

All that matters is the next game. Just gotta get one first.
