Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 71: Edmonton comes out victorious over Los Angeles in potential playoff preview

The Edmonton Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings have built a rivalry and the near end-of-season game always acts as a good bet for a potential playoff preview. This game lived up to expectations as it was a highly physical bout with the Oilers emerging with the two points once the dust settled.

Charts and observations from the game are below!

Game events

  • In a huge rarity for Edmonton, they only registered 20 shots. They still scored four goals though, with three goals against former Oilers goalie Cam Talbot and one on the vacated net.
  • The Oilers were not racking up the shot counter as they were busy with the hit counter. They finished the game with 49 total hits.

  • Connor McDavid picked up three points and is now five assists away from 100 on the season. He’s also getting closer and closer to becoming the league leader in points—now just two points behind Nikita Kucherov.
  • Stuart Skinner’s shutout bid was broken with less than seven minutes to go thanks to a goal from Arthur Kaliyev.

All situations Corsi

  • Edmonton’s first goal came right off the faceoff at 4v4 as McDavid picked up the loose puck for a neat backhand tuck into the net.
  • The Oilers were good on the penalty kill as they didn’t allow the Kings to generate much offence in those situations.
  • Despite the Kings having 13 more total shots, the shot attempt totals weren’t as drastic as Edmonton still mustered 48 Corsi.
  • Edmonton won the game by playing the same way they always do: high-danger shots above all others. They prioritised shots in the slot and barely took any shots away from the net-front area.
  • The defence could have been cleaner as Edmonton also gave up a fair number of slot shots, but Skinner was strong in facing those shots.

5v5 Corsi

  • Despite the Kings being ahead most of the game at 5v5 Corsi, the Oilers did catch Los Angeles in the third period before they keeled off to defend their lead.
  • The Oilers’ net front goal here was redirected off of Adam Henrique’s chest. When you’re planted in front of the crease, scoring with body parts off deflections is not all too surprising.
