The Edmonton Oilers played host to the Buffalo Sabres and they gave the visitors an absolute walloping. From a multi-goal comeback to a definitive blowout, the Oilers took full advantage of a .500 team and gave the Sabres a reminder of why they’re not on the same level.
Charts and observations from the game are below!
Game events
- Eight goals were scored on less than 40 shots—now that’s what I call efficiency.
- It was a physical bout as 60 total hits were thrown between the two teams.
- The Oilers were much better in the faceoff circle as well.

- The Oilers were down 2–0 and 3–2, but six straight goals for the home team came after that.
- Four assists for McDavid put him very much still in the race for the Art Ross.
- Zach Hyman is on the cusp of 50 goals as he scored his 47th and 48th of the season.
- Darkhorse Norris Trophy candidate Mattias Ekholm showed off some offence with a three-point night.
- Connor Brown scored again after waiting oh so long for his first of the year.
All situations Corsi
- The Oilers rant away with this game in terms of shot attempts.
- After the Sabres went up 2–0, the Oilers helped them to zero shot attempts before tying it up.
- Moreover, the Oilers potted three late-game goals after the Sabres took their last shot attempt.
- The Oilers were all over the slot with their chances. Hardly anything came from the blue line at all while everything was funnelled right to the slot.
- Edmonton’s defence was pretty good at keeping the Sabres to the outside for the most part.
5v5 Corsi
- It’s not every day you see a team score seven 5v5 goals in a game but that’s exactly what the Oilers did. Just pure even strength dominance.
- The Oilers held the Sabres to long stretches without shot attempts and it got to the point where Buffalo just retreated.
- At 5v5, it’s still high volume on the high-danger shots for Edmonton, which is even more incredible away from the power play.
- On the other end of the ice, it’s less high-danger volume from the Sabres.
- This type of result is what you teach hockey players as ideal outcomes in new-age hockey tactics. The Oilers are a model team.
