Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 66: Edmonton bounces back to pick up win over Canadiens in overtime

After a high-octane matchup against the Colorado Avalanche where the Edmonton Oilers lost on a buzzer beater, the Oilers had a great opportunity to get back into the win column against the lowly Montreal Canadiens. However, things got spicy as Edmonton blew a two-goal lead and required overtime to shakily seal the victory.

However, the team got the job done and picked up two points to stay hot on the Vancouver Canucks’ tails for first in the Pacific Division.

Charts and observations from the game are below!

Game events

  • The Oilers had over 30 shots with just six misses the entire game. Pretty good efficiency there.
  • Edmonton struggled in the faceoff circle in a rare result for the team.
  • Despite getting five power play opportunities, Edmonton only converted on one—but it was a big one being the overtime winner.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers were outshot for most of the game. Montreal used their offensive pressure to score twice early in the third period.
  • However, the late game power plays gave Edmonton all the momentum they needed to completely tilt the ice in their favour. From a graphical standpoint, their Corsi at the end of the game almost looks like it’s parabolic!
  • The Oilers funnelled so many of their shot attempts into the high-danger areas. Only two shots were taken at the blue line.
  • Montreal was a bit more scattered as Edmonton’s defence didn’t give up as many high-danger chances.

5v5 Corsi

  • At 5v5, the Oilers were outplayed. This is a rare result for Edmonton that they can learn from. This game didn’t need to go to overtime.
  • Not many shot attempts for Edmonton at 5v5, but they still scored twice from in close.
  • On the other end, Montreal converted on one high-danger chance themselves.
