Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid named NHL Second Star of the Week

This is becoming a familiar trend, isn’t it?

For the third time in four weeks, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has been named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week.

Connor McDavid week in review

In three games during the week, McDavid recorded a whopping 10 assists, including his first career six-assist game against the Detroit Red Wings, putting him in elite company as one of three players in the last 25 years to accomplish the feat (Kris Letang back in December and Leon Draisaitl in 2021).

Additionally, he became the fourth fastest player in NHL history to reach 600 career assists, behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Bobby Orr.

During the week, McDavid also had a three-assist game versus the St. Louis Blues and one assist on Edmonton’s second goal against the Dallas Stars on Saturday.

Other stars of the week

This week, McDavid found himself sandwiched between Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk.

Matthews had six goals and two assists for the Toronto Maple Leafs, including becoming the first player since Mario Lemieux in 1995–96 to have six hat tricks in one season. He recorded two this week in back-to-back games.

Tkachuk helped lead the Florida Panthers to three consecutive wins this week in which they outscored their opponents 18–4, including a 9–2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. He had three goals and eight points over the week.

The upcoming week for McDavid

The next two months are a gruelling schedule for the Oilers, beginning with a four-game week. The Oilers will be taking on the Arizona Coyotes on Monday, the Boston Bruins on Wednesday, and back-to-back on Friday and Saturday against the Minnesota Wild and Calgary Flames.

These four games will feature plenty of opportunity for McDavid to have another high-scoring game. Maybe even enough for him to finally reclaim the title of NHL First Star of the Week.
