The Edmonton Oilers fail to tie the NHL record for most consecutive victories

The Edmonton Oilers historic run is unfortunately over.

With tonight’s defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights, the Oilers failed to tie the NHL record for the number of consecutive victories with 17 straight wins. They will remain in a tie for second in the history books, which has to hurt.

All that being said, the team turned their season around with this streak and it will be remembered with such fondness.

What. A. Run.

Edmonton’s streak comes to an end

This was the Oilers’ first loss since December 19, 2023, which means their “undefeated in 2024” tagline is no longer accurate. It’s still insane to say over a month into the calendar year, the team suffered their first loss. With the defeat, this is where the team will remain:

RankTeamSeasonWins
1Pittsburgh Penguins1992–9317
T-2Edmonton Oilers2023–2416
T-2Columbus Blue Jackets2016–1716
T-4New York Islanders1981–8215
T-4Pittsburgh Penguins2012–1315

Some of these teams on the list are filled with Hall of Famers, legendary seasons, and even one Stanley Cup victory. The 2023–24 Edmonton Oilers still have a lot of games left to go, but this is already a significant achievement to celebrate.

During the streak, the team was on an absolute tear where they have allowed two or fewer goals in fourteen of the games. This is in large part due to the resurgence of Stuart Skinner and Kris Knobauch’s stellar defensive game plan, something that will benefit them for the rest of the year and post-season.

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman were all point-per-game players, with Warren Foegele, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Ryan McLeod contributing significantly upfront as well.

The team is now 24–3–0 over their last 27 games and has a clear shot at jumping even further up the Pacific Division for a significant playoff position.

The team is back in action on Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks as they look to start a new streak.
