Edmonton Oilers Prospect Roundup: Matt Copponi can never stop

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age. All data is from EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis) which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Prospect of the week

Matt Copponi is our prospect of the week as he continued his great and consistent play. He has become even more of a pest, and has become the primary scorer at Merrimack College. He has started to bring some of the snarl and rat like attitude that future Hall of Fame player Corey Perry brings to the NHL. I am very excited about this player and am very curious as to where he will go from here.

Here’s a quick run through of news and notes on the rest of the prospect pool. AHL prospects will not be included as they are talked about during the Bakersfield Condors weekly review.

ECHL

  • Jake Chiasson numbers have not looked great overall, but he has played seven games since the last time I wrote about him and has scored one goal and two assists. So he has gotten better at his production in the last two weeks. Hopefully he continues to be more significant on the ice.

OHL

  • Brady Stonehouse has started to pick up a bit in production. He has two assists in his last five games and one goal, four assists in his last 10 games. He has started to become more of a difference maker on the ice in terms of offence, but he is also in Junior. Therefore, his production should be closer to a point per game. The agitating and hitting style of Stonehouse is still there and, in my opinion, if he does everything right, he will be a third line scorer with bite in the NHL.
  • Nathaniel Day’s game has gotten better in the last five games as he has recorded a .878 save percentage. Keep in mind that he is only 18-years-old at the moment.

KHL

  • Maxim Beryozkin’s pace has slowed down a bit as he has only scored one assist in five games and one goal, two assists in 10 games. Every player goes through a pace like this, especially in the KHL. Beryozkin’s ice time has decreased a little in the last five games. Therefore, he will have to put in a strong effort to make him stand out more in the coming weeks.

NCAA

  • Our prospect of the week, Matt Copponi, continues to bring his game up on a consistent basis. With seven goals and 21 assists in 24 games, Copponi has upped his game to a significant level and he has become public enemy #1 in the eyes of the opposition. His grittiness and skill are always on display. Like I said before, yes he is 20-years-old, but that only makes it even better for the Condors and Edmonton Oilers fans because we know he will be close to professional level ready after this season.
