Edmonton Oilers Prospect Roundup: Shane Lachance shining in the NCAA

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age. All data is from EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis) which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Prospect of the week

Shane Lachance is our prospect of the week again as he continued his great play. He has become even more comfortable on the power play.

LaChance has scored four goals and two assists in five games. As LaChance has gotten more consistent, he has become a staple in the top six.

Here’s a quick run through of news and notes on the rest of the prospect pool.

AHL

  • Unfortunately, there have been floodings in San Diego. Therefore, the Bakersfield Condors were not able to play this week. However, they will still play two games in the next 12 days and we will be seeing Dylan Holloway back in the AHL for a conditioning stint. We will see how the Bakersfield forwards will react having an offensive presence like Holloway in the lineup.

ECHL

  • Jake Chiasson has really fallen off in terms of production and ice time. He has played 31 games in the ECHL with the Fort Wayne Comets and he has only registered one goal and three assists. He was able to generate an assist last night. But if he is not able to make himself more noticeable on the ice and show more effort, he will find it hard to get back to the AHL.

OHL

  • Brady Stonehouse had a bit of a quiet week in terms of offence. He scored only one assist in his five games but he still brought the grit and hitting that Stonehouse is known for. He did generate a lot of chances but he is in a bit of a dry spell.
  • Nathaniel Day had a bit of a rough week as he had a 3.60 GAA and a save percentage of .856 in his last five games.

KHL

  • Maxim Beryozkin is continuing his stellar play as he has scored one goal and five assists in his last 10 games. However, in his last five games, he has scored two assists. Beryozkin is known as more of a playmaker and he has a bad habit of not shooting the puck. I think his own team and Oiler scouts would love it if he shot the puck more.

NCAA

  • Matt Copponi has continued his great play. He has been the most consistent prospect for the the Oilers next to Raphael Lavoie, Shane Lachance, and Olivier Rodrigue. He has scored a goal and three assists in this week in five games. That one-game suspension for him did not slow him down.
  • Tomas Mazura had a very quiet week as he did not register a point in five games.
