The Edmonton Oilers re-call James Hamblin from the Bakersfield Condors on emergency basis

The Edmonton Oilers have made an emergency re-call, bringing up forward James Hamblin from the Bakersfield Condors.

Hamblin gets the re-call

Hamblin, born in Edmonton, Alberta, was undrafted but signed with the Oilers on March 2, 2022, as a free agent. This came after playing two years in the AHL with the Condors, where the Oilers organisation got to see him play and develop.

The now 24-year-old isn’t all new to the NHL. He played 10 games with the Oilers last season on the first year of his two-year deal. However, he’s still looking for his first NHL point. So far this year, Hamblin has put up three goals and two assists over six games with the Condors. Last year, Hamblin posted 10 goals and 18 assists over 52 games in the AHL.

Emergency re-call details

The NHL doesn’t simply allow for teams to make emergency re-calls as soon as regular players are injured. The Oilers had to play their previous game short a player—which they did against the Nashville Predators with 11 forwards and six defencemen; and they have to not have the cap space that permits a regular re-call—which they don’t.

Further, the player re-called on an emergency basis has to be making less than $875K and will be sent down as soon as the roster is healthy again. For the Oilers, this is satisfied as Hamblin currently has a cap hit of $807.5K. Once either Connor Brown or Mattias Janmark are fit to play again, Hamblin must either be re-assigned to the AHL or the team has to keep him called up under regular call-up circumstances.

While Hamblin is with the team on an emergency basis, his cap hit does not count toward the team’s overall cap hit.
