After what was easily the Oilers biggest win of the season against the Bruins, the team was in tough playing the next best team in the Atlantic Division. The Toronto Maple Leafs are always one of Canada’s most watched matchups when the Oilers are on the game sheet, as we are treated to a Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews one-on-one show.
Despite McDavid beating him on the score sheet, Matthews wins this round due to the shellacking put forth by the Maple Leafs. In fact, one could argue that Mitch Marner’s four points was the best individual performance last night.
The scoring started early and often, with Mattias Ekholm scoring his first goal as an Oiler just 22 seconds after Toronto opened the scoring. The unfortunate trend for the Oilers was that they blew yet another multi-goal lead in this one, after being up 3-1 just a few minutes into the second period. The Maple Leafs would score five straight and simply never look back.
Not the best effort of the season for the Oilers, with turnovers being a massive issue, but one of the more entertaining games that should surely be a favourite Stanley Cup Final matchup should things work out that way.
