Despite multiple key injuries up front, the Edmonton Oilers are off to a strong start to the season. The attrition at forward has seen Filip Hallander added, just as several young players and depth option have received extended auditions.
Still, even with some injury returns on the horizon, most of the rumours are based around potential forward additions.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the latest buzz in this week’s rumour roundup.
Are Nashville Predators looking to sell?
A theme around the league is that teams off to a slow start might quickly become sellers. With a new GM at the helm, the Nashville Predators are a prime candidate to sell if they falter.
The Predators have some interesting veterans, especially up front. It is easy to see how players like Steven Stamkos, Ryan O’Reilly, or Jonathan Marchessault could help the Oilers. At the same time, balancing the cap cost, the trade cost, and navigating trade protections are obstacles that will require some manoeuvring from the Oilers.
So long as Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard have the Oilers rolling, it might be enough to entice some Stanley Cup hungry veterans to consider the Oilers an option. Naturally, there is no guarantee that any or all players will accept Edmonton, but the strength of the team will help either way.
Philadelphia Flyers also wanting a change
Another team that might be looking to change up their roster after a slow start is the Philadelphia Flyers. Over the past year, the Oilers have been linked to scoring winger Owen Tippett. With the Flyers floundering, it might not be long until sweeping changes are made.
While Tippett remains an intriguing option, there is no telling what the Flyers will be forced to contemplate. Michael Bunting was linked to the Oilers over the summer and is a pending UFA. Perhaps even a prime aged forward might be available, like the defensively impressive Noah Cates.
Niederreiter is available
Nino Niederreiter has been scratched by the Winnipeg Jets in recent games, fuelling some trade speculation. The veteran winger saw his offence plummet below his usual last season, but he still might have something to give.
Sitting around a half a point per game throughout his career, Niederreiter is often thought of as a decent play driver as well. With his size and skills, he might be a useful middle-six option in the right circumstances. He does seem to fit with the Oilers tastes, and could be a low cost option. In all likelihood he will have to show he can still contribute before teams look to take a swing.
UFA wingers options for the Oilers
The other option to upgrade the forward group might come from the UFA market. In particular, both Patrik Laine and Vladimir Tarasenko could offer some scoring talent from the wing.
There is little news that either are closer to signing, but regardless they remain options for teams. Tarasenko might be the better fit for the Oilers, as the veteran might look to join a contender as the season grows later. Regardless, the Oilers might be eager to see how a healthier lineup looks before adding another forward.
