Everyone except for the ECHL is underway now. This means that most prospects within the Edmonton Oilers system are back to on-ice development. Some early projections have Oilers prospects setting up the 2025–26 campaign to be their breakout season, and possible NHL prospects earlier than expected.
Let’s take a look at the past week in the Oilers organization.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.
Nathaniel Day, Goaltender, Bakersfield Condors
Although he has yet to play a game this season, Nathaniel Day has already exceeded expectations. He has also had a handful of recent wins:
- Showing an absolute workhorse mentality for the Flint Firebirds the past two years appearing in 113 of the possible 136 games, which is quite a large workload for a CHL goaltender.
- His ECHL regular season record of .981 across three games as a 20-year-old.
- His ability to step in and lead Fort Wayne in the playoffs as a rookie goaltender, putting up a respectable 2.17 GAA, a .914, and 2–2–0 record across five game appearances.
- Winning the positional battle beating out Allsvenskan Goaltender of the Year Samuel Jonsson, and former Usports Rookie of the Year Connor Ungar for the final spot in the AHL with the Condors.
It’s safe to say, Day’s last year has been a roller coaster of excitement and one of exceeding expectations everywhere he’s gone.
This season look for him to ideally start over half of the Condors games, splitting the net with veteran journeyman, Matt Tomkins. Day’s play is highlighted by his high end senses, good athleticism, and high level endurance.
The future looks bright for the former 6th round selection by the Oilers.
Edmonton Oilers prospect updates
AHL
- The Condors opened their AHL regular season on the October 11, with a 7–6 loss to San Jose. Their next game is this Saturday, October 18 in a rematch against the Barracuda.
- Veteran Goaltender Matt Tomkins was in net on the October 11, but expect rookie Day to get his first ever AHL start on the October 18.
- Beau Akey and Damien Carfagna did not play on the October 11, which are two vital pieces of the Condors defence for the season as well.
- Roby Jarventire and Marjala lead the Condors in points with three each.
ECHL
- With five Oilers affiliated players/goaltenders, (Jonsson, Ungar, Jayden Grubbe, James Stefan, and Brady Stonehouse), officially assigned to Fort Wayne this year, expect the organization to keep closer tabs on the ECHL than in years past.
- Fort Wayne opens their season October 17 on the road in Indiana to play the Indy Fuel.
Europe
- Goaltender, Daniel Salonen played a singular game this past week, a 4–2 victory against Liiga team JYP. Salonen stopped 23 of 25 shots, good for a .920 sv%.
- Eemil Vinni also secured a win this past week with a 4–3 win against Jokerit this past Friday.
- Sundin continues to get regular shifts in the SHL, averaging 19:29 in his game this past Thursday against Örebro HK, where he also scored his second goal of his SHL career. He then played the Malmö Redhawks on Saturday where he played 17:32.
- Petr Hauser has been reassigned to the second tier league in the Czech league. He will now be playing for Berani Zlin of Czechia2.
NCAA
- Asher Barnett played a pair of games against Providence College with the University of Michigan this past week. He looks to slot in as a third pairing defender with the Wolverines this season.
- Paul Fischer begun his season with a game against ASU on the 10th, and Quinnipiac on the October 11, putting a point up against each.
- Dalyn Wakely saw a spike in TOI to 17:15 for his second game of the season against Merrimack College on the October 10. He looks to be working his way up the U-Mass Lowell lineup.
OHL
- William Nicholl remains out and recovering from injury. Expect him to return around the halfway point of the OHL’s season.
WHL
- Tommy Lafreniere continues to be an asset for the rebuilding Blazers, and continues to find a bit more playmaking, offensive instincts, and finishing ability. He found the back of the net twice this past week across three games.
- David Lewandowski looks to be a mid-round steal, as the big German has started off the 2025–26 campaign strong, and looks to be adding more offensive layers to his overall game. Across his three games this past week he put up four points.
Russia
- Maxim Beryozkin continues to struggle in the KHL, and although he is becoming more of a complete player in all three zones, realistically if this downward momentum continues expect the Oilers to lose interest in signing him at the end of the season.
