News from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman this morning that Trent Frederic is likely to re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers.
Frederic was acquired at the trade deadline from the Boston Bruins in a three-way deal. The Oilers sent prospect Shane LaChance to the New Jersey Devils; and sent prospect Max Wanner, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Bruins in exchange for Frederic and forward Max Jones.
A pending unrestricted free agent, Frederic is on the final year of a two-year contract he originally signed with the Bruins that pays him $2.3M annually.
Unlikely to happen during the finals
Friedman indicated that this contract is unlikely to get done during the finals, but when Friedman reports something there is a very good chance it’s going to happen. Here’s the full quote from the 32 Thoughts Podcast on Saturday morning:
Friedman: One of the things that’s being rumored around here is that Trent Frederic might be sticking around.
Bukauskas: Really, like new contracts sticking around? Like, not leaving sticking around?
Friedman: Yes. I can’t imagine we’re gonna find out during the final. They’ve got more important things to worry about, but that was something I heard in around the building tonight.
Bukauskas: As the playoff has gone on, he’s looked more and more comfortable in Edmonton colours, and you can see why they targeted him at the deadline.
Friedman: And a good teammate.

Fitting in with the Oilers
It took Frederic some time to get into game action with the Oilers because he was injured when he was traded. However, since getting back into the lineup in the final game of the regular season, Frederic has fit in well with the team.
He has played in all 18 playoff games with one goal and four points so far, mostly playing on the third line with Adam Henrique and Connor Brown. Frederic has averaged 11:32 TOI in the playoffs, and is tied for 10th in the NHL with 66 hits in the postseason.
It would be a great add to have Frederic signed for a few more years. He’s just 26 years old and could be part of a strong Oilers team for years to come.
