Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers acquire Trent Frederic and Max Jones in a deal with the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils

The Edmonton Oilers have got some work done prior to the deadline, trading for a pair of Boston Bruins forwards. Trent Frederic and Max Jones join the Oilers, who also acquire the rights to prospect Petr Hauser. The Bruins will be retaining 50% of Frederic’s cap hit.

The deal also involves the New Jersey Devils, who will retain 25% of Frederic’s cap hit as well. An added wrinkle here is that Frederic is injured (lower body), and may or may not be able to return to action prior to the playoffs.

Who the Oilers are letting go

On the way out, the Oilers have sent prospect Max Wanner, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Bruins, as well as prospect Shane LaChance to the New Jersey Devils. The 2025 second-round pick originally belonged to the St. Louis Blues as compensation for their signing of Phillip Broberg.

In all the Oilers parted with a handful of mid-round assets to add to their forward depth. Both Frederic and Jones bring an edge to the ice as big, physical forwards. The retention is costly, but helps the Oilers with cap flexibility. Hauser is a 21-year-old right shot forward playing in Czechia, a fifth-round pick by the Devils in 2022.

LaChance and Wanner are both reasonable prospects with good size. Wanner, a right shot defenceman, had been an underrated gem in the Oilers prospect pool as a seventh-round pick in 2021. LaChance, meanwhile, is a scoring power forward that is serving as captain for Boston University. As a sixth-round pick himself, LaChance was also a relative draft steal. While neither player ended up suiting up for the Oilers, the team was able to parlay some shrewd draft choices into more immediate help.
