Oilers Update: Edmonton reclaims Travis Dermott off waivers from Minnesota

After being placed onto waivers by the Minnesota Wild, a Travis Dermott waiver claim was made by the Edmonton Oilers. This brings him back to the team that signed him at the beginning of this season.

He's back! After spending nine games with the Wild, the #LetsGoOilers have claimed Travis Dermott off waivers.

Dermott’s back in town, sort of

When Dermott first signed with the Oilers, it stemmed from a professional tryout in the 2024–25 preseason. He then signed a one-year, $775K contract with the team. In 10 games with the Oilers at the start of the campaign, Dermott went pointless while averaging just over 13 minutes per game as a depth defenceman.

He was eventually waived and claimed by the Wild, where he posted zero points across nine games. With the Wild, he averaged less than 11:30 per game. The Wild placed him on waivers on February 25, and instead of going to the Iowa Wild, he’s now heading to California.

The Oilers immediately assigned him to the AHL after the successful claim. So look for him to slot into the Bakersfield Condors lineup in the near future.

What’s next for Dermott

This stint in Bakersfield could be his first extended look in the AHL in quite some time.

Dermott played one single AHL game in 2022–23 with the Abbotsford Canucks. Prior to that appearance, he last laced up in the AHL for the Toronto Marlies back in 2017–18. Of course, his injuries have kept him out for periods, but it’s interesting to see someone with limited games played in the NHL while having a much sparser AHL game log.

For now, his AHL usage with the Condors and any potential NHL call-up is yet to be determined. Perhaps spending time in the AHL could help him become a depth option for the Oilers in the final stretch of the season.
