Edmonton Oilers

Report: Edmonton Oilers may extend Ty Emberson as early as January 1, 2025

Ty Emberson joined the Edmonton Oilers this past summer in a trade that sent Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks. After putting up very strong analytical numbers on a poor Sharks team, he was initially billed as a potential breakout candidate, and has fulfilled that expectation fairly well this season.

The Oilers can sign Emberson to a contract extension as early as January 1, 2025 since he’s currently on a one-year deal. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman singled out Emberson as a player he is keeping an eye on as he believe the Oilers may be looking to sign Emberson to an extension as soon as possible.

Elliotte Friedman on Ty Emberson

Here’s what Friedman had to say on this week’s 32 Thoughts Podcast:

On January 1st, players who have been signed to one-year contracts are eligible to sign extensions. One of the ones I’m going to be looking at is Ty Emerson of Edmonton.

A bit of a slow start. He’s a quiet guy who had never played in a “noisy” market before. Emberson has cooled down. He’s playing very well.

And the other thing too is after what happened last summer, the Oilers are not going to be taking any chances.

I I would not be surprised to see the Oilers engage Emberson and work on trying to get something done, not long after [January] first.

Extending Emberson makes a lot of sense

Emberson has fit in really well on a pretty thin Oilers blueline. He has been a key part of the very solid third pair alongside Brett Kulak, and has been one of the Oilers’ most reliable penalty killers to boot. He has played 62:19 on the penalty kill this season, the second-most minutes on the team behind only defensive dynamo Mattias Ekholm. By all accounts, Emberson has been a very good replacement for Ceci.

With how the Philip Broberg situation played out, and with his very strong first season with the St. Louis Blues, there’s no way the Oilers will let Emberson go. Locking him up to a mid-length contract at a cost controlled number is the best decision for team and player.

With a limited NHL resume, Emberson shouldn’t be overly expensive to extend, and even if the Oilers do overpay a tad to lengthen the deal, it’s a good move to make.

I’d look for them to settle somewhere in the $2M-$3M range for three or four years.

  1. I would be all for 3-4 years at $2M per season. $3M sounds like a lot to pay for a bottom pairing Dman and that is all he has shown so far here
