The Edmonton Oilers have signed Travis Dermott to a one-year, two-way contract. The defenceman will be earning $775K at the NHL level. This deal was expected after Dermott’s performance with the team throughout the preseason, as he joined the Oilers on a professional tryout.
Dermott’s path to the Oilers
Selected 34th overall in 2015 by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dermott played five seasons with the team, with his fifth season with Toronto being abbreviated as he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. He was limited to 11 games with Vancouver in 2022–23 due to injury.
Last year, he signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes, and his impact off the ice was more important than his on-ice impact. He was the first player to protest the NHL’s ban on pride tape and his actions led to the league rescinding their ban.
Now he joins the Oilers with 329 NHL games under his belt. He’ll give the team more blueline depth and should slot into a handful of games in 2024–25. The Oilers made several transactions today including this signing, and they will all be officially filed tomorrow, October 9, for cap purposes.
